App State's Middleton signs with Jets

BOONE — Former App State safety Doug Middleton has signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent on April 30.

Middleton said on Twitter that he has signed with the Jets following the end of the NFL draft.

“God's timing is always perfect. Ready to go to work!!!! Blessed to be a New York Jet,” he tweeted.

Middleton finished sixth on the Mountaineers in tackles with 53 this season. He did not have any interceptions, but had three pass breakups and a half-tackle for a loss of nine yards.

Middleton helped lead the Mountaineers to their first bowl game in the modern era in 2015. Appalachian State finished 11-2 this season, which included a 31-29 win over Ohio in the Camellia Bowl.

Thus far, Middleton is the lone App State player to sign an undrafted free agent contract. His teammate, defensive end Ronald Blair, was drafted in the fifth round by the San Francisco 49ers earlier Saturday.

Middleton and Blair are the latest Mountaineers to reach the NFL. Those who finished on NFL rosters last season include running back Travaris Cadet (Saints); guard Daniel Kilgore (49ers); tackle Kendall Lamm (Texans); cornerback Demetrius McCray (Jaguars); receiver Brian Quick (Rams); safety Joel Ross (Buccaneers); and receiver Tony Washington (Jaguars).
