Texans' Kendall Lamm contributes at tackle, tight end

Whenever the Texans get shorthanded on offense, the fastest solution tends to be versatile offensive tackle Kendall Lamm.

Sunday was a perfect example of his ability to contribute at more than one position.

The former undrafted free agent from Appalachian State played 21 snaps on offense during a 27-20 win over the Tennessee Titans. He lined up as a blocking tight end and at right tackle when right guard Jeff Allen got hurt and briefly left the game as tackle Derek Newton shifted over to guard.

"I really have a lot of respect for Kendall," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said. "He really understands his role. He takes a lot of pride in it. He’s obviously a swing tackle for us, can play right or left. Then he plays the jumbo tight end for us. He really enjoys it. He likes it. I thought it really helped us." A former high school basketball player and all-conference college offensive tackle, Lamm is athletic at 6-6, 310 pounds. He caught one pass for seven yards as a rookie last season when he played in 15 games with four starts.

"It gives you the opportunity to step in and help the team," Lamm said. "You know it's going to happen because you never know how the game is going to go."

Could a few passes be in Lamm's future?

"I catch them all the time in practice, just tossing the ball around," Lamm said. "Coach OB said, 'We'll see how it goes.' I caught one last year, but that was last year. If it happens this year, I'll do what I can."
